Removing a wooden fence increases the functionality of this updated back yard, while multiplying opportunities to create beautiful views and focal points. We now have room for a lawn, vegetable garden boxes, planter beds, and keeping the rusted old metal storage shed. The colorful mostly drought-tolerant planting design provides backyard habitat for birds, bees, butterflies, pollinators, and beneficial insects to boot.
Shaded Seating Space
In first meetings, we ask homeowners if they have enough seating space that is shaded (otherwise it will not be used). We knew that by taking down the fence that divided the yard in two, we’d gain access to an area which is shaded by a large Japanese maple. Ideally, the tree lies close to the house, which we can use to introduce an enjoyable secluded feel. The design works with the land, taking advantage of the natural side slope by siting the new patio below the pool. Although it’s only a one foot elevation change, it’s enough to create interest and feel like its own room.
An Old Shed Adds Character
An “old” rusted shed adds character to the yard, and marries the old to the new. It becomes a new / old focal point which anchors the plantings. It’s part of the color scheme of the yard. We’ve used dark brown throughout: in the shed, in the moss rocks, and even in the seed heads of the coneflowers. Differences in the brown’s solidity, height, and bulk are fun.
The colors and textures all work together. The solid shed is the perfect backdrop for the lacey silver-leaved Dusty Miller. In turn, the Dusty Miller is a unique foil for the brightly colored coneflowers which are positioned in front.
Shiny Pots and Moss Rocks Add Interest
Shiny pots also add interest to the yard. Their height helps one to see something pretty behind the diving board. They can be seen from inside the house. Moss rocks are a final touch, helping to accent the plantings which provide food to pollinators and wildlife.
Different Axes of Views and Focal Points
Removing the fence not only increases functionality and living space, but it also offers new views and focal points. Homeowners can sit at various spaces throughout the yard and enjoy looking at various focal points. These include the pool, pots, the shed, and the Japanese maple. And of course, the wildlife that now comes to the plantings is part of the view.
